The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is India’s apex body for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research. Founded in 1911 as the Indian Research Fund Association and renamed in 1949, ICMR operates under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It plays a pivotal role in advancing medical knowledge, guiding health policy, and responding to national health challenges.

ICMR focuses on both communicable and non-communicable diseases, nutrition, reproductive health, environmental health, and traditional medicine. It manages a nationwide network of institutes and regional medical research centers (RMRCs), including specialized institutes for cancer, virology, tuberculosis, vector-borne diseases, and epidemiology.

During public health emergencies, like COVID-19, ICMR becomes the scientific nerve center for diagnostic protocols, vaccine trials, treatment guidelines, and data dissemination. Its studies and white papers significantly shape India’s health policy and clinical practices.

In addition, ICMR funds extramural research, collaborates with international health bodies like the WHO, and supports capacity building through fellowships and grants for researchers and medical students.

ICMR’s website serves as a critical resource for scientific reports, research publications, guidelines, and real-time updates on health crises. It bridges the gap between science and public health in India through cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking.
